The flagship cluster

EnergyFields is a hybrid renewable energy cluster combining wind, solar PV and battery storage on one grid position. All EnergyFields assets are housed within Wind Relic, a dedicated subsidiary of Dim Sum Energy. Treating the cluster as an integrated hybrid rather than a set of isolated projects caps the evacuation requirement, improves grid utilisation and allows supply to be shaped to customer demand.

Hydro


Electric Fish: dispatchable run-of-river power

Electric Fish harnesses the Orange-Fish Transfer Scheme. Water runs through the turbines and back into the river: a non-consumptive use that generates dispatchable electricity without taking water out of the system.

Little Fish and Beenleegte are the first two of fifteen planned run-of-river schemes, with a combined nominal design capacity of approximately 9 MW. The full programme carries a total installed capacity of roughly 36 MW.

Because the flow is regulated by the Department of Water and Sanitation, output can be predicted and scheduled. Based on hydrology data from 2008 to 2018, mean production is 8,241 hours per calendar year, reflecting 98 per cent plant availability and 96 per cent grid availability.

To match the dispatchability of 36 MW of hydro you would need roughly 2.3 times the wind capacity or 3.2 times the solar capacity, plus storage. That makes hydro an unusually affordable proposition for private offtakers.

The Electric Fish schemes sit within the wider EnergyFields development footprint, which makes both the grid connection and the socio-economic programme materially more efficient to deliver.

Grid connection


1.9 GW allocation south of Poseidon

The EnergyFields facilities connect to the national grid through main transmission substations located south of the Poseidon substation, with a grid allocation to connect 1.9 GW into two main transmission substations. A merge of the two substation positions is currently under review.
